Subject:A Sonnet to the Fall
Time:04:16 pm
The withered flowers tremble on the vine
Beneath the gentle urging of the wind.
Their beauty faded by the hand of time,
Their lives flown hence as none can comprehend.
How quiet doth these flowers to their grave
Their sad heads bent in silent reveries.
The world weeps for we fear we cannot save,
These friends of old from cold unpleasantries.
But fear ye not brave children of our age,
Lest deep despair should rob you too of strength
Cling fastly to your love and to your rage
For only hand and hand we'll go the length.
Hope is song which lives in woman and man
United in one voice sing Yes We Can.

Time:09:40 am
I put too much faith in the people in this state. For the record I'm signing up to fight the next round of this battle. Last night (after considerable amounts of tequila) we decided that we think the next step should be removing the word marriage from the legal language. If marriage is so religious a term which and has be hijacked in such bigoted ways then I think it has no place in government. People can get together with their congregations or their families and bitch about what marriage means to them. I'm going to start dreaming of the day when I can go down to city hall with my future husband or wife to get my civil union. My friends and family can be responsible for sanctifying my marriage.

We have a long road ahead, but like a friend of mine said,  we have already come a long way since 2004. Let's take courage from our progress and keep on fighting for what we know in our hearts is right. Obama's message of "yes we can" which called so many of us to action this election cycle can be a battle cry in the coming struggle.  Obama reminded us last  night that we have proven that we are not a generation of apathy.  Hope, Change and Action, the future is ours.

This one's funny.

If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now (even if we don't speak often or ever) please post a comment with a completely made up, fictional memory of you and me. It can be anything you want - good or bad - but it has to be fake. When you're finished, post this little paragraph in your LJ and see what your friends come up with!

My choice to abstain from meat is carefully considered and based on my beliefs about the ethics of animal treatment, and my deep concern for the environmental impact of livestock farming.  If one more person describes me as a "picky eater" because I do not eat meat I might explode.   I find this description of my dietary choices extremely rude.

I know there is more to say about this, but I'm to irritated to sit in front of my computer right now.

Ulee, our family black lab, is very sick with Cancer.  The vet said he has days to live.  If he has ever wagged his little black tail at you, please think a happy thought for him, and for us.

Patty,

Thank you for your thoughtfulness! You really know how to make a girls week.

I'm currently living in San Francisco and making plans for a mighty comeback from an extended creative hiatus. After working on two shows that were void of any thought, artistic, intellectual or otherwise, I did a little hiding under the bed. I was afraid of getting cast in another time consuming and unrewarding project and worse, that these kinds of projects were all I was good enough to do. After about a year I am realizing that life without theatre is for me, only half living. I crave analysis, the creative dialog, the expression, the adrenalin and the community of people who care not only about being on stage, but about putting things on stage that are challenging to performers and audience alike. I’ve realized that I’m sick of being so afraid that getting anything done becomes impossible. I want to email Peter Mostkoff with something under my belt that will make him proud. I want to find my way back to the art that has been my life for as long as I can remember. I want to make things happen.

So that’s where I am. I’m making arrangements to leave my job in Palo Alto, and to take the CBEST in the summer so I can substitute teach in the SF area in the fall. I’m signing up for acting classes and making dates with friends from UCSC as they trickle up to the city. I’m about to return to the city of San Mateo’s Music and Fine Arts Camp for my fifth year as Drama Teacher. This summer I’ve chosen Feiffer’s People by Jules Feiffer. I want to teach my students about using theatre as a tool to comment on the world around them. In short: Life is good and getting better every day.

As I mentioned before, please do let me know when you are doing something in the city as I would love to participate or, if you are performing, enjoy.

Yours,
Katie Vroom

PS thanks for hanging in there for my rant. It feels good to put all that in writing. :)

Life is Grand!
Here are some of the highlights…

On Saturday I attended a lovely BBQ in Cupertino at Amy’s house. Both the food and the company were highly enjoyable. Lex attended my show later that night, surprising me with a dozen beautiful red roses at the end of the performance. The cast wasn’t going out so we headed back to SF where we had yummy peach drinks at a Sushi restaurant a few blocks from his house. The discovery and convenience of these drinks could prove to be dangerous…

After my matinee on Sunday I drove to Oakland for dinner with Danielle, Micah (this is how you spell it yes?) and Lex. We went to Buffalo Bills, a cute little brewery in downtown Hayward, to enjoy the rather delicious pub fare. Much thanks is due to Mr. John Harris Jr. for introducing me to it.

Monday night Lex and I took his bike over to the Sutros Baths. I can’t wait to go back and take lots of pictures. Dinner at Mels and then home to bed.

Tuesday was another date night with those two crazy wonderful friends of mine. Micah and Danielle came to SF for dinner and House. I was able to convince them to try the Peach Nympho at Blowfish (19th and Bryant) Yum! House was especially gross this week. It was far from my favorite episode but it did a good job of setting up a bunch of nifty possibilities for next season.

Last night Lex and I watched TV and did some much needed spring cleaning in his living room. I’m sure that sounds less then thrilling but it was actually the perfect evening.

Today, when I got into work and checked my email I found that I had received a link to a review of my show…the portion of the review dedicated to me was short but complimentary: “In the role of Mona, the local girl with a dream of performing Ophelia, Katie Vroom is masterful. A recent UC Santa Cruz graduate, Vroom says that she is considering graduate school and an MFA in Shakespeare.”

I have 4 shows this weekend but I’m really looking forward to the downtime in between. I have a bit of packing to do to prepare for my move next week. Also, I am really looking forward to having Monday off. I have absolutely no commitments to work or my show. It’s been a while since I’ve had one of those days. I sure there will be much merriment made.

If I haven’t seen you in a while, I would love to hang out and that goes for all of you...Let me know when you are free and we will make plans.

Subject:My Weekend in Brief...

Current Mood:[mood icon] grateful
In summary..
Friday: Opening night...The show opened without a hitch. John Byrd brought me 2 dozen long stemmed red roses which was indeed a happy surprise. At the Champagne reception I was approached with high praise by the director of a San Jose based Theatre Company. The reception itself was nice despite the blue haired ladies and questionable pizza bites. They started taking the food away before we were ready to leave so I snagged a bowl of green olives and munched away causing an incredible craving for a martini.

Saturday: Woke up early and did some work around the house. Took a trip to the fabric store where I purchased fabric for a new project I’m excited to be working on. On the way out of the parking lot I saw I woman who reminded me of Sharon and nearly burst into tears in my car. I guess it’s still hard to believe that she’s gone. My mom and grandma attended the matinee along with a chapter of the red hat society. It was another smooth show, after which I was abrasively pulled aside by a reporter from the Santa Clara Daily who praised my command of Shakespeare. She questioned me for a while for the story intended to grace the cover of the Daily on Wed. the 24th. Spent some time working on my project before I drove to SF to attend the screening of Aaron’s thesis documentary with Lex. I finally met Dan and Laura. Enjoyed some party time downstairs and then back to Lex’s for much needed sleep.

Sunday: Slept till 9 (yay me!). Lex, Laura, Dan, Aaron, John, Zeus and I walked over to a divine Crepe restaurant called Ti Couz (on 16th @ Valencia) for brunch, although by the time our party of 7 was seated it was lunch. I had a delightful mimosa while we were waiting. After lunch back home for some lounging in a desperate attempt to escape the heat. Lex read and I brushed up on my trivial pursuit…better watch out Paul…at around 4 Lex and I hopped on his motorcycle and rode across the Golden Gate to Marin. We wandered around for a while at the headlands before heading back home. It was an amazingly beautiful outing. We made tortilla soup for dinner. I fell asleep while he answered emails.

Monday: Up early for breakfast before work. Tonight: Martini Monday at Rebecca’s house for her birthday. At some point before then I have to pick up something fun for her.

Tuesday: Dinner and TV with Danielle, Micah and Lex. I believe we are going to make enchiladas.

As is my custom, I recently gave a copy of Rilke's "Letters to a Young Poet" to several very special people. Today I received this email from my dear friend John Byrd regarding the first of ten letters. I have included here both his thoughts and my response. For those of you who have read this book I strongly encourage you to add your own insights.

From the official Red Cross Restrictions on Giving Blood…

"HIV, AIDS
You should not give blood if you have AIDS or have ever had a positive HIV test, or if you have done something that puts you at risk for becoming infected with HIV.

You are at risk for getting infected if you:

-have ever used needles to take drugs, steroids, or anything not prescribed by your doctor
-are a male who has had sexual contact with another male, even once, since 1977
-have ever taken money, drugs or other payment for sex since 1977
-have had sexual contact in the past 12 months with anyone described above..."

I’ve know about this for about 5 years and its the reason I choose not to give blood. As far as Im concerned, if they are so eager for blood then they can let me gay friends give blood too. God, just seeing it in black and white on the website have upset me so much that I can't even talk about it.
So there you go.
Do with this knowledge what you will...
